The God You Were Made to Know
A 2,000-year-old story with a message for you, today.
Section One
A City Full of Questions
1 of 9
Nearly 2,000 years ago, a follower of Jesus named Paul walked into Athens, one of the great cities of the ancient world. It was a place of learning, beauty, philosophy, and religion. The people were thoughtful, spiritual, and curious. They had temples, altars, and ideas about almost everything.
But Paul noticed something. In the middle of all their searching, they still did not know the true God.
One altar even had this inscription:
“To the unknown god.”
Acts 17:23, ESV
Paul used that moment to lovingly tell them the truth:
“What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.”
Acts 17:23, ESV
That is where this story begins.
Many people today are a lot like the people of Athens. We have information, opinions, entertainment, religion, success, pain, questions, and longing. Yet deep down, many still wonder:
- Who is God?
- Why am I here?
- What is wrong with the world?
- Can I really be forgiven?
- What happens after I die?
The Bible says God has made Himself known.
Section Two
The God Who Made Everything
2 of 9
Paul began with the most basic truth:
“The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth…”
Acts 17:24, ESV
God is the Creator of everything. He made the heavens, the earth, every nation, every person, and every breath we breathe.
You are not an accident. Your life has meaning because you were made by God and for God.
The Bible says:
“In him we live and move and have our being.”
Acts 17:28, ESV
Every heartbeat is a gift. Every sunrise is mercy. Every longing for love, justice, beauty, truth, and eternity points us back to the God who made us.
Section Three
God Is Near
3 of 9
Paul told the people of Athens that God made mankind so that people would seek Him.
“That they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.”
Acts 17:27, ESV
Then Paul said something beautiful:
“Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.”
Acts 17:27, ESV
God is holy, powerful, and glorious. Yet He is also near.
He is near to the brokenhearted. He is near to the guilty. He is near to the person who feels lost. He is near to the one who has tried everything and still feels empty.
Even the questions in your heart may be one of the ways God is showing you mercy.
Section Four
The Chasm
4 of 9
The problem is that we have not loved God as we should. We have gone our own way. We have sinned against the God who gave us life.
The Bible says:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Acts 17:27, ESV
Sin is more than making mistakes. Sin is turning from God, choosing our own way, and living as though we belong to ourselves.
Jesus said people often avoid the light because their works are evil. But He came to save, not merely to expose.
That sin separates us from God.
“The wages of sin is death.”
Romans 6:23, ESV
That is why the world feels broken. That is why our hearts feel restless. That is why guilt is real. That is why death feels so wrong.
We were made for God, and life only makes sense when we are reconciled to Him.
“Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.”
Romans 3:23, ESV
Section Five
Repentance
5 of 9
Paul told the people of Athens that God had been patient with them, but now He was calling everyone to respond.
“He commands all people everywhere to repent.”
Acts 17:30, ESV
To repent means to turn. It means we stop defending our sin, stop hiding from God, and turn toward Him with honesty and surrender.
Repentance is not cleaning yourself up so God will accept you. It is coming into the light because God is calling you home.
God does not call us to pretend. He calls us to truth.
Section Six
The Cross
6 of 9
Paul then told them that there is a day coming when God will judge the world.
“He has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed.”
Acts 17:31, ESV
That man is Jesus Christ.
Jesus is the Son of God. He lived the life we have failed to live. He loved the Father perfectly. He spoke truth. He healed the broken. He welcomed sinners. He revealed the heart of God.
Then Jesus went to the cross.
The Bible says:
“Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures… he was buried… he was raised on the third day.”
1 Corinthians 15:3-4, ESV
At the cross, Jesus took the punishment sinners deserve. He bore our sin in our place so we could be forgiven. He gave His life so we could receive life.
“He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.”
Matthew 28:6, ESV
Section Seven
The Resurrection
7 of 9
Paul said God gave proof of who Jesus is by raising Him from the dead.
“Of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
Acts 17:31, ESV
The resurrection means Jesus is alive. It means His sacrifice was accepted. It means death does not have the final word. It means judgment is real, mercy is available, and Jesus is Lord.
The hope of the Christian faith rests here: Jesus died, Jesus was buried, and Jesus rose from the dead.
Section Eight
The Open Door
8 of 9
The good news of the Bible is clear: we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Bible says:
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”
Acts 16:31, ESV
And again:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16, ESV
To believe in Jesus means more than knowing facts about Him. It means trusting Him. It means relying on His death and resurrection as your only hope before God.
We do not earn salvation. We receive it by faith.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith.”
Ephesians 2:8, ESV
Jesus is able to forgive you, cleanse you, and make you new.
The Invitation
When Paul finished preaching in Athens, some mocked, some waited, and some believed. That is still true today.
What will you do with Jesus?
God made you.
God knows you.
God is near.
God calls you to repent.
God sent His Son to save sinners.
God raised Jesus from the dead.
God promises eternal life to everyone who believes.
You can come to Him right now, not by trusting in your goodness, your religion, your past, or even the words of a prayer, but by trusting in Jesus Himself.
You could speak to God honestly:
“God, I know I have sinned. I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sin and trust in Jesus. Forgive me, save me, and lead my life. Amen.”
The promise of Jesus is:
“Whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
John 6:37, ESV
